Our history

Read our story

It was on Saturday 15th FEBRUARY,2020 when we had a meeting with the Lay Chaplain Mr. Tom Mbonimpa and the chairperson Corpus Christi Catholic Chaplaincy - town Campus by that time Mr. Kiwu Joseph at Kihumuro to discuss some of the challenges that were affecting the Kihumuro students by that time

In that meeting, I was chosen to be the first Corpus Christi Catholic Chaplaincy - Kihumuro representative on the student’s council of the chaplaincy in town

When I began sitting on that council of the chaplaincy ,the Spirit of God came to me and I thought and developed different ideas to address the existing challenges of Kihumuro campus as regards the catholic faith

The following were the different ideas I thought about to address the situation that was prevailing;

  • i. To convince the chaplain and work hand in hand with the Corpus Christi Catholic Chaplaincy - town Campus and make sure that the chaplaincy provides transport means to all the Kihumuro students to and from the chaplaincy to attend mass on each and every

  • ii. To convince the chaplain to always come to Kihumuro Campus every Sunday to celebrate mass with the Kihumuro students as he gets facilitated in terms of transport. Fortunately, this idea was emblessed and received well

I then came back on ground and did the following; Teamed up with a few people to see how this thing would be worked out successfully, This involved the following activities; Meeting the university officials seeking for permission to always use some rooms in the university building for mass on Sunday

Mobilizing the students to participate in different activities like choir, altar serving, taking readings, and petitions among other activities to make ourselves very ready

Finally, it was on Sunday 28th February, 2021, when we had our very first mass celebrated at Kihumuro campus in the University’s main auditorium GFL02 and it was led by the chaplain Fr. Peter Reilly at 4pm This mass was estimated to have been attended by 35 believers and this involved people from both campuses i.e Kihumuro and Town campus Since then ,we began having mass celebrated at Kihumuro every Sunday at 8:00am in the morning.

Achievements

Our Achievements

Mass has been celebrated here at Kihumuro for the last two years since this chaplaincy began We have been able to form a small committee of 15 to 20 people for the last three leadership regimes comprising of the chairperson, vice chairperson, general secretary, treasurer, among others and its by the tireless efforts of these people that the chaplaincy has remained standing.

We have so far maintained our Care Groups ever since 2019 and through these Care Groups, we have known each other more as students, we have been able to identify and bring back the lost sheep, shared different ideas and experiences in the academic , spiritual and social world as well as strengthened the faith of most of the believers.

We have also been able to secure specific rooms for our church services forinstance the Auditorium GFLO2 where we have our Sunday services from, the Server room from where we have our lunch hour sessions and choir practices and a room for keeping our church items. Lots of thanks to our beloved FAST Faculty administrator Mr. Dennis Thomas Lukaaya who has been with us and helped us achieve this. May God bless him abundantly.

Challenges

Our Challenges

Most of the Kihumuro students stay far from the faculty for instance students who stay at Mile 3 and beyond which makes them get a difficulty in coming to participate in most of the chaplaincy activities.

Our community is not well and equally represented on the central and other committees of the entire Corpus Christi Students’ council. This has made Kihumuro at most times left out since it is not allowed to take part in decision making of their own chaplaincy

Furthermore, as Kihumuro Community, we also have a challenge of time meant for mass on Sunday (8:00am). This is a very early morning time and it makes most of the students miss out church services on Sundays since some of them come from far and find it difficult to be at the faculty by this time.
